Remembering Thierry Mugler

One of the best-known fashion designers of the last century, famous for his futuristic and sculptural designs, sadly passed away at age 73. He dominated European runways in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He changed people’s trajectories and careers by leaning on power dressing as an aesthetic, inspiring plenty of designers today. La Gazette pays tribute to Thierry Mugler, remembering 5 of his most iconic moments.

Adriana Sklenarikova wearing Couture FW 1997/98

The design, made for Couture FW 1997/1998 La Chimère, was exhibited in Mugler’s exhibition ‘Couturissme’ at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This dress was one of the most expensive haute couture dresses in fashion history and resembled a winged mermaid.

Anjelica Houston for Vanity Fair 1990

After breaking up with Jack Nicholson, Anjelica Houston decided to stage a come back and make an editorial statement wearing an already iconic shiny body by Mugler, made so by Cindy Crawford who wore it in the in the 1990 runway during Fashion Week. The shoot was directed by Stephen Fears and styled by Marina Schian.

A squared shoulder body that quickly became a classic. Iman walked Mugler’s runway and collaborated with him several times. As said by the model: “Mr. Mugler was not only a designer who believed in me but also in my womankind…. the black model,” she wrote. “He was not only an ally for me in front of the crowd but also behind my back & ours — A true friend!”

‘Les insectes’

A shot by Dominique Isserman, showing Mugler’s way of leaving minimalism behind and mixing people, nature and fashion in his designs. The collection was made for Couture spring/summer 1997, and included hard-shelled creatures and butterflies, later referenced by plenty of designers.

Kim Kardashian for 7Hollywood Mag

One of his ‘modern muses’, Kim Kardashian, rocked a variety of poses and ensembles that achieved an old Hollywood glamour style, with a touch of Mugler’s magic. The reality star was one of his favorites and collaborated with him plenty of times, including the Met Gala ‘Wet look’ and ‘Camp Crystal Girl’ designs, her ‘CowBot’ Halloween costume, and an iconic cover with Vogue Arabia in 2019.
