After a year of uncertainty, no in-person fashion weeks, zoom meetings and closed borders, 2021 arrived, and with it a new rise of talents in the fashion industry, feminist trends, conscious fashion and unexpected collaborations. What was your favorite fashion highlight of the year?
As we look forward to 2022, let’s review the moments that shaped 2021 and take a look at some trends that will surely carry on after we shout Happy New Year!
All eyes on Nensi Dojaka
We were all lucky enough to see this Albanian womenswear designer win the 2021 edition of the LVMH Prize for Young Designers. Nensi Dojaka became a favorite of many celebrities during the year and she’s expected to grow even further in 2022. The Central Saint Martin’s graduate launched her namesake label in 2017 and interned for designer brands like Peter Piloto and Fyodor Golan.
Fashion, but make it eco conscious
According to TAGWALK, 90 collections had sustainable initiatives this year, which represented a 27% increase compared to 2020. Good news for the industry and the planet! Brands like Gabriela Hearst, Vivienne Westwood, Chloé and Marine Serre dramatically contributed to the industry’s trend towards sustainability and to be honest, we applaud them.
The braid comeback
Box braids, cornrow braids and bejeweled hair were seen 16.1% more on the runways this year compared to 2020, according to TAGWALK. Wondering why this is a major highlight? Easy. When it comes to diversity, brands and designers have made huge missteps over the years. Braids have a relevant history associated with them and seeing them properly used on runways should be considered a step in the right direction.
Lilac: A powerful winter trend
We all started 2021 wearing vivid green, a promising color that came with the hope of a better year and new trends. Although it was beautifully worn by a lot of celebrities and bloggers, the year’s ending with a lavender-like shade that we are all loving and wearing. If you’ve been watching La Gazette’s latest YouTube video, you already know how to wear this new must-have color!
